Travelling to the Isle of Wight

There are 3 car ferry routes between the south coast of England and the Isle of Wight.

  • Lymington (New Forest) to Yarmouth (west Wight). Crossing time 30 minutes. Driving time from Yarmouth to Castaway Cottage 50 minutes. Information and Booking www.wightlink.co.uk
  • Southampton to Cowes (central north Isle of Wight). Crossing time 55 minutes. Driving time from Cowes to Castaway Cottage 35 minutes. Information and Booking www.redfunnel.co.uk
  • Portsmouth to Fishbourne (north east Isle of Wight). Crossing time 40 minutes. Driving time from Fishbourne to Castaway Cottage 20 minutes. Information and Booking www.wightlink.co.uk

For those travelling without a car, apart from the above ferries which all carry foot passengers, the following options are also available:

  • Southampton to West Cowes. Crossing time 22 minutes. No direct bus route to Castaway Cottage. Information and Booking www.redfunnel.co.uk/redjet
  • Portsmouth to Ryde pier. Fast Cat. Crossing time 18 minutes. Information www.wightlink.co.uk. Train from pier head to Ryde Esplanade (5 minutes) or 10 minutes' walk. Number 14 Bus from Ryde esplanade to Castaway Cottage (20 to 30 minutes).

Southsea to Ryde esplanade by hovercraft. Crossing time 8 to 10 minutes. Information www.hovertravel.co.uk. Bus to Castaway Cottage as above.

Bicycles are carried on most of the above ferries - often free. Cycling time from Ryde to Castaway Cottage around 25 minutes. Cycling time from other ferry terminals is a lot longer!! Bicycles can be secured outside the front of the cottage.

Travel on the Isle of Wight

Bembridge is linked by a direct bus service to Ryde, Sandown and Newport (the capital). The bus stop is a minute's walk from the house. www.islandbuses.info

The Isle of Wight also has its own train service linking Ryde, Sandown and Shanklin www.island-line.co.uk.
